Project Background

The Computer Assisted Teaching and Learning Project (CAT&L) was initiated as a part of the British Council project Towards Independence and Sustainability 2002-2005. This CDROM presents an outcome of this project Training manual with resources for the English language teachers who are willing to integrate technology into their teaching and learning.

The purpose of this manual is to provide training for teachers in practical applications of computers for teaching the languages by referring them to the related readings, introducing samples of lesson plans and activities and suggesting some additional resources to explore on their own.

What is inside the CDROM

The training modules are divided into three sections: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced. The sections titles reflect more the way of moving from the knowledge of basic technology applications before proceeding to the next level of training than the level of technology skills. At the moment there are 9 training modules on the CDROM:

Basic Intermediate Advanced
Use of Word Processor for teaching writing Using Microsoft PowerPoint for teaching four skills Writing online
Introduction to the Internet Using web resources in the classroom Digital Storytelling
Use of e-mail Creating and posting quizzes on-line Use of Spreadsheets in the language classroom

How to use this manual

This training manual was developed with the concept of self-managed learning, which means that teachers who will be using this manual are provided with the necessary resources to master the selected technology application on their own time and pace. There is no certain way from which module to start: however, we suggest looking first at the Basic modules as some of the content there will be necessary for the Intermediate and especially Advanced sections.

Each module consists of a short introduction to each module which highlights the strongest features of the particular technology application for the language learning and teaching. The Content part specifies what teachers will learn out of this module. The Materials include articles that describe practical applications in the classroom and the impact on students' learning, training manuals (downloaded and online), and ready-made templates. The Activities consist of sample lesson plans and activities developed for this particular module or found on the Internet. In Web resources, teachers will find links to additional activities and free software downloads.

The whole sections Additional Resources has been created for this manual that is complied of the websites recommended by the project team.  The selection reflects both topical and skill-based approach to the presentation of   web resources.
